Anchors Away

I designed this quilt to be a wall hanging, but it could easily be a baby quilt.  It measures 39″ x 42″ when done.

I was inspired by this ombre stripe fabric by V and Co. I saw when Vanessa Christenson was on Quilt with the Stars.  She designed this fabric for her Color Me Happy line so you would get four coordinating colors.  It is a wonderful fabric to work with.

Yes, I know this is a picture of the grey. But I had all of my navy cut into pieces when I realized that I needed a picture.

I used Microsoft Excel to mock up the design as it was the only program on the computer I was using at the time.  I do find Excel easy to work with as long as you are only using squares and triangles.  I do most of my sketching on graph paper anyway.  Each cell is 1″ in Excel.  I ended up using Illustrator and Photoshop when I was making the pattern to share

I wanted to get a gemstone look so I used all four colors in the quarter square triangles in a semi-random manner.  I also made cut my blocks a tad too big so that I can trim them down to be perfect.  I know this can be a bit tedious, but it really helps with the final assembly and overall appearance of the completed quilt.

Materials

Here is what you need:
1 yard Color Me Happy stripes in blue

1 yard light grey or other background fabric

That’s it.  And these measurements are in excess.  I don’t like running out when I make one small measuring mistake.

I have tried to compose it in plain language and make it easy to follow.  I classified it as “Confident Beginner or Intermediate Quilter”.  Please send me feedback as this is the first pattern I have designed and put out for use by the public.  It is free, but I request that you return credit in regards the design.  The pattern does not include instructions for quilting or binding.  The pattern is just for the top.

I hope you enjoy making this.

UPDATE:

The original inspiration for this quilt came when I found out that my brother-in-law and sister-in-law were having a baby.  At the time, we didn’t know the gender, but I felt drawn to this design anyway.  I was all sorts of excited once I found out that it is a boy.  I added a label to the back with the baby’s name and presented it to them.  They seem very happy to receive it and I will look wonderful in their nursery as they are doing a nautical theme.
